Wolfram|Alpha is Really Neat
Friday, May 22, 2009
I don’t often review other things, except when they’re really cool. Two days ago I talked about how the Internet is quickly going to become a God-type entity, if it doesn’t quality already. Five days ago, although I didn’t know it at the time, the internet got a lot smarter.
Enter Wolfram|Alpha.

Hi guys.
So what do they have to say for themselves?:
Wolfram|Alpha is an ambitious, long-term intellectual endeavor that we intend will deliver increasing capabilities over the years and decades to come. With a world-class team and participation from top outside experts in countless fields, our goal is to create something that will stand as a major milestone of 21st century intellectual achievement.
And what do they want to do?
Wolfram|Alpha’s long-term goal is to make all systematic knowledge immediately computable and accessible to everyone. We aim to collect and curate all objective data; implement every known model, method, and algorithm; and make it possible to compute whatever can be computed about anything. Our goal is to build on the achievements of science and other systematizations of knowledge to provide a single source that can be relied on by everyone for definitive answers to factual queries.

It can even define it’s own big words!
And there are a ton of things you can do with it.
- It can solve algebraic equations, which alone makes it a great addition to the internet.
- It automatically outdoes itself by also solving complex systems, making it probably the best calculator ever.
- It doesn’t even require use of algebra with x as a variable.
- It graphs anything. Even really complex things.
- It finds derivatives and antiderivatives.
And that’s just math!
You can explore many other facets of Wolfram|Alpha, such as:
- Find out how old you are down to the day, among other things, by tying in your birthday.
- Distances between places, including flight paths.
- Location of Mars in the night sky.
- Fill in blanks for your crossword puzzle.
- Find the dew point in your local city.
- Find information on your favourite domain names.
- Find out who wrote your favourite book.
- Analyze select music tones.
- Compare select geometric figures
- Find out our GDP.
- And many more!
However, Wolfram|Alpha is not without imperfections. Here are a few things it can’t find the answer to.

It’s so weird. Duke Nukem Forever is both more and less dead than a cat in a box. Crazy.
First one to calculate the wave equation for Duke Nukem Forever wins.
Duke Nukem LIVES!!
