What Is Peter Watching?
Just a little over a year ago, I wrote “What is Peter Reading?” to keep track of… well… what I was reading. I decided that I want to do the same thing, except for something a bit more fun and light-hearted — the television shows I’m watching. Thus, “What is Peter Watching?”
The way I currently watch TV is to watch all the episodes of a season in the series, about one per day (usually with Netflix), and then when finished with the show, move on to the next one. I also watch the Daily Show and Colbert Report from time to time, as they air on their respective websites.
If you have any suggestions for television shows to watch, feel free to recommend some in the comments section!

I watched a half-dozen episodes of Lie to Me a while ago. Interesting stuff. Since then I’ve read a couple books on body language and have been surprised to learn that effective detection of deception (so these books claim) has much more to do with the position and movement of the limbs than it does facial expression, which is easily faked. My impression was that the show focused almost exclusively on reading expressions, though, so I wonder how realistic it really is.
The BBC show Sherlock is awesome.

I know the show has hired Paul Ekman as a science consultant for the show. Ekman is the psychologist who invented the system of detecting emotion from faces. He even writes about his contributions to the show on his personal site. Unfortunately you need to make an account to read it, but it’s kind of worth it.

I look forward to it.

I really enjoy Criminal Minds.

I’ve wanted to watch that for awhile. Thanks for reminding me.

I never ordinarily watch TV, but a year ago I watched a great deal for several months while in the hospital. Only one program really stood out, but you’d probably find it too violent: Breaking Bad.
I found a program called Burn Notice diverting; Eureka was amusing in a nerdy sort of way.
Didn’t Chris Long direct “The Mentalist”? Anyway, I couldn’t stand it.

Haha. I’m interested in what makes you think I might find it too violent. I’d be interested in looking into it. Thanks for the recommendations and commentary.

I’ve watched a few episodes here and there. I started out hating it a lot in the first few episodes of Season 1. Now, watching a few of the newly aired episodes, I like it.

My family has watched more of it than I have and claims it grows tiresome quickly. I guess I’ll find out.

Because it 1) is very violent, and 2) I don’t think you like programs that are very violent.
Am I justified in inferring that you want me to tell you why I think you wouldn’t like very violent programs? Then, first tell me if it’s true.

I’m not sure, I haven’t really watched that many violent programs. I’d imagine that I fall on the public average with regard to television violence tolerance, if not a little below average because I’m very squeamish with needles.
I was just interested in if I was specifically giving off a violence adverse persona, or if it was just that Breaking Bad is so violent that the average person wouldn’t like it, and you were (correctly, I think) assuming I was like the average person.

It looked to me that you are a little below average on TV-violence tolerance (as you say), where the average person would find it too violent.

I’m watching Breaking Bad now, I’m impressed, I can’t decide if it’s one of the blackest comedies I’ve seen or a hopeful tragedy. The characters all well developed, though now an again seem to suffer idiocy (realistically though).
I admit I like the Mentalist, though when I watch it I bear in mind I’m watching a superhero show, as I do for Sherlock (I’d also advise watching Jekyll, also by Stephen Mofatt, though there are some plot holes, but I quite enjoyed the potrayal).

Recommending “Dollhouse.” Very strong doses of philosophy of mind and transhumanism, with suspenseful plot. The first few episodes sell sex and flashy violence, but this turns quickly into longer threads where the sex and violence are less showy and more disturbing. And it’s Joss Whedon, so important characters have much less plot armor than most. Be nervous.

I forgot to mention: “Dollhouse” only ran two seasons, but the writers had ample warning, so they were able to give it a satisfying ending. I know I’m reluctant to get into series that end abruptly. Not an issue here!

I updated my “to watch list”. It now includes Dollhouse! Thanks for the recommendation!
