The Democrats Have Total Control! Oh No!

Wednesday, July 8, 2009

I’m sorry to bring politics up yet again, but this wonderful piece of Republican cinema has gotten me a bit riled. Sure, breathtaking soundtrack and Franken imagery aside, it’s an amazing ad…

Well… except for the fact that by amazing, I mean amazingly wrong.

“It’s finally here… With 60 senators the democrats”

This part is spot on accurate! Great job to the Republican National Comittee. The Democrats do indeed have 60 senators! You guys can count!

“have total control”

Wait… Way to ruin it. Do you understand what total control means? Hitler didn’t even have total control. Do you seriously think that by acquiring the magic number of 60 that instantly all Democratic proposed legislation passes through Congress? Well, sure you don’t… but you expect the American people to. I think I understand.

“No checks. No balances.”

Okay, “total control” I can understand. It’s a bit of a stretch — yes it’s a hyperbole. But it’s still something you can just throw around because it doesn’t have any definition. But checks and balances… those have definitions. You can’t just waive a claim that having a supermajority leads to America no longer any checks and no balances around like that. You’re a Republican! Show some fiscal restraint!

Checks and balances are the things written into our Constitution by the Founding Fathers to prevent us from blowing ourselves up… government style. They are meant to be a separation of powers, meaning they are checks and balances between the three branches of government… not the two parties in Congress.

Of course, I’m sure the Republicans complain that the Democrat President who probably is too grumpy to veto anything those mean Democrats come up with in the Congress. And sure that dang House of Representatives is also too Democratic to do anything American, and sure they have a 255 to 178 advantage there, but the Democrats have a chance. Perhaps the old “Conservative Court” can do something about it. That’s what separation of powers really is — that’s what checks and balances are. Not the doom to America that comes when Al Franken sits down in Congress.

I’M COMING TO TAKE AWAY YOUR CHECKS AND BALANCES!

“Higher energy taxes? No debate.
Government run health care? No debate.
More wasteful spending? No debate.”

Sure, because obviously all 60 Democratic senators are going to fall in line and vote unanimously on whatever Pelosi proposes. …Because that’s obviously just what the old 59 Democratic Senators did when all they had to do was bribe Olympia Snowe. Right?

No. There are a lot of center-left Democrats coming from newly ex-Republican districts who don’t want to risk their seat to become a party puppet. Nobody votes for things just because people tell them to… or rather, Senators make a job off of not voting for what people tell them to. The people of America vote for whatever their told to vote for, or at least based on the outlandish misrepresentation of civis in this ad, that’s what the makers of this ad seem to believe.

Also, do you really think Democrats waste money because they enjoy it? …No wait. Don’t answer that.

“Eliminating the secret ballot? No debate.”

Sorry… what? Which democrat is proposing eliminating the secret ballot? Are you sure there won’t be any debate on that?

Oh. The Republicans are fearmongering about a bill in Congress to eliminate the right of workers to vote in favor or against a union by secret ballot. While that does sound scary, it’s quite a few pegs down from eliminate every secret ballot ever. Not quite what the ad here wants you to believe.

The bill, called The Employee Free Choice Act is a piece of legislation requiring unionization to be filled by “card check” instead of by secret ballot. The bill was requested by Unions because they believe that they can use this to increase union membership through presumably scare tactics and intimidation. Regardless of whether the bill is correct or not — you can read the pros and cons in the bill’s extensive Wikipedia article — the moderate-left Democrats are ruining the scheme by — get this — questioning the bill and claiming that they will not vote for it.

Gee? Debate and dissent in the Democratic Party? Senators questioning what the party heads are pushing for whatever reason? Who would have thought this possible? Surely not the Republican Party, as indicated by the above ad.

Good thing the Republicans would never use scare tactics and intimation. Right?

“Negotiating with terrorists? No debate.”

Oh. The Republicans are using scare tactics and intimidation.

I think I understand where the Republicans are going with this. I can’t believe those Democrats actually want to talk to those obviously terrorist nations like Iran, North Korea, and Canada when you could just hurl nukes at them and ask questions later.

Gee, those Democrats have no backbone. They’re not like that star Republican Glenn Beck, who agreed with his guest that Osama Bin Laden should attack America to motivate us into doing what’s right again.

Don’t believe that? We have it on video…

Anyways…

“They own everything.
…And have no one to blame now.”

They own everything? Really? Even the Moon?

Breaking news! The Democrats own the Moon!

“Their taxes. Largest tax increase in American history.
Their record deficits. $11.6 trillion in deficits.
Their failed economy. 9.5% unemployment.”

Wait… I’m sorry.

Who’s fault is this? DID YOU JUST SERIOUSLY NOT ONLY PLAY THE BLAME GAME, BUT SWITCHED EVERYTHING YOU DID ONTO THE DEMOCRATS?!

Sure. Obama came to power, and then the economy tanked. That’s what I remember.

I certainly don’t remember anything bad happening to the economy under the Bush Administration.

I certainly don’t remember anything about having a deficit under the Bush Administration.

I certainly don’t remember Bush proposing the exact same thing Obama has been doing by enacting the Troubled Assets Relief Plan. I don’t see that $100 Million being critiqued in this ad.

And I definitely don’t remember anything about the Democrats directly creating unemployment and it being all their fault.

Also, about that biggest tax increase in US history? Really?… The McLeod County Chronicle. That’s where I get all my trusted statistics on the large tax increases the Democrats are pushing for no reason.

This is what real news looks like.

“In 2010 you can hold them accountable. Vote Republican. 2010.”

Sure, I have no problem if you do this. Nay, I expect you to hold the Democrats accountable for what they do in Congress. But remember that if you want to vote Republican, you probably shouldn’t do it because of this ad.

“Get involved. Text 2010 to GONSRC”

Real Political ads use Twitter pages… Just sayin’.

  1. Jeff says:

Of course it’s wrong; it’s Republicans saying it. That’s a QED scenario: do Republicans say it? If so, it is so wrong as to be laughable, save for the fact that millions believe it. There are exceptions, such as when a Republican says that he is going to become a Democrat because Neo-conservatives have taken over; the exception here is how Republicans note that he is not a “real” Republican for doing this – it is true. He is, in fact, a Democrat.

Because Republicans are currently ultra-Right-wing-deluxe, and Democrats are merely moderate-Right-wing-to-moderate-Left-wing.

Beautiful soundtrack, though. Republicans really have a sweet sound.

What’s the source? Can I get it on I-tunes?
