A Milli by Lil’ Wayne

Wednesday, October 14, 2009

Continuing the rap challenge established in my review of Forever, we have this guy…

…saying the words “A Milli” about three thousand times.

…Or maybe three. …Though I doubt that.

Anyways, the song!

So using this music video (which I can actually embed, unlike the last one… Woo!):

We have Lil’ Wayne using the first minute to inspect a car, hug a guy, and get out of a truck. Then he starts saying incomprehensible things while the camera frame shifts, which is a little bit distracting.

This mumbling continues as a song. He then does something that’s censored, and we can only wonder what he just did. He then starts walking around with frame shifts again.

About a minute in, I finally realize he’s shirtless. I realize that’s probably the norm for rap videos, but considering all the makeup attention he’s getting, he probably should be wearing awesome clothes or something.

Then he gets back into the truck. I honestly don’t know what the music is saying, in part because I’m so distracted by not knowing what Lil’ Wayne is doing.

The tune itself is kinda nice, but it hasn’t gone anywhere. It still sounds the exact same it did from the opening minute as it does in throughout the second minute.

Then Blue Dude walks in and he teams up with Bodygaurd Man to get Lil’ Wayne to come back out of his truck and sing the song he was paid to sing.

My gosh! 1:40 in and he has come out. He finally has words I can hear and… what’s this?! A shirt! He’s putting on a shirt! With frame shifts!

He then stops to take photographs with various people, just like any famous rapper would do… except he does it while rapping. That’s the kind of multitasking we should all appreciate!

A couple more seconds in and Lil’ Wayne continues his trend of increasing the amount of clothing he’s wearing with the addition of a hat. He also adds even more followers to his little rap posse.

He then takes the option to Jaywalk. He is not setting a good example for children. …Or at least any better of an example than whe nhe was doing …censored stuff.

And speaking of censored stuff, he does something censored again. Childhood hero?

Now’s a good time to reiterate that the song hasn’t gone anywhere. By “going somewhere” I mean picking up and building on itself. Similar to Progressive Rock and/or the Halo Theme, it’s when a song changes and adds progressive tones, or when a song shifts, rather than staying the same it always was. This is also why the song sounds so repetitive.

Too add insult to injury, the volume from this song just started bothering my Dad a little bit. Silly Dad, this is for Science!

And speaking of science, at the rate Lil Wayne’s posse is going 2:44 into the video, they are at risk of getting run over. You can’t just walk down the street like that!

A lot of time passes. More walking. The song is almost over. And it still hasn’t “gone anywhere”. And eventually the song ends with “To Be Continued”. To be continued with what? The exact same song repeated again?

Hmm. To fix this song I would try to build it up somehow, but I’m not really sure how it could be done without becoming especially obnoxious. Perhaps it’s just best if we all move on. I’ll give this song a grade of C.

How about this? Metal without lyrics (ie, none of the need-to-get-used-to-it-to-not-mind-it growling)! Quality’s kinda terrible (mono means some of the stuff gets lost, I guess!) but still a pretty fun song.

You don’t have to only review rap! You can review other music that people say is annoying, too.
