A Little Touch of Re-Design
Well actually, it’s more of a re-re-re-re-re-re-design, because its my sixth attempt at tweaking the look of the place. This time, however, the tweaks aren’t nearly as dramatic.
If you’ve been to this blog before, you can see that it looks a little different as of yesterday.
Subtitle!
First off, I updated the subtitle / tagline of the blog, which you can see under the header. The very first subtitle was “There are a lot of ideas out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are mine. It’s your job to see if these overlap.” The second and previously current subtitle was “I like to dabble, and when I dabble, I learn things. And when I learn things, I want to share them. And when I start sharing, I have lots to say. Thus, a blog.”
Now, the subtitle reads “A blog celebrating the great play of drawing conclusions and integrating a wide variety of fields”.
Categories!
I also updated the categories that blogs fall into. It’s been slightly over a full year since the previous categories were established, and with the addition of about 100 more essays, they needed some readjustment — categories with too few essays could be lumped together and categories with too many could be split apart, all to more meaningfully and more effectively separate essays by topic. The new categories should be pretty self-explanatory.
A Bit of a New Look!
I also redesigned the look of the site a bit. Now, you can read the entire essay on the front page without having to click “Read this Article”. I thought even with my lengthy blogging that reading entirely from the front page would be preferable, and I think it would work even better with new attempts of mine to blog with a bit less words per article. We’ll see how it works out.
To accomodate the expansion of the front page, I made a few changes to the sidebar over on the right. Now, the currently reading is featured prominently at the top, and underneath it is a list of recent essays, since its no longer easy to see them at a glance from the front — this lets me get the best of both worlds.
Next going down I have “Favorite Essays”, which is a personal selection of the five essays I think best give a sample of what my blog has to offer. This replaces the previous “Popular Essays” which were the top ten essays by number of times visited.
Everything else is the same, but in a different order, to flow better. I also doubled the amount of comments that display so you can more easily track discussions as they unfold. So far, displaying twenty comments at a time lets you see a week’s worth of discussion, on average. You can always use the Greatplay.net Discussion Page to comb through the archives of every comment ever made on this site, if you’re weird like that.
Let me know if you like it, have any comments / suggestions for improvement. Discussion still works the same.
